Dog panic attack at night?

My hubby and I have been noticing an increasing number of dogs showing signs of panick attacks at night for the past several weeks. There's no specific time of the day we notice them. The dog is normally pretty well behaved around humans. In fact I have a feeling our neighbors are starting to get suspicious.

Our new puppy, Bella, is about 1 year old. We live in a very rural area and are in a small mobile home. We can hear the dogs barking from our neighbors house.

We've been to the vet and the vet said we're fine and that it was normal behavior for a puppy at her age.

We're starting to believe that the problem may be the puppy is scared of being alone in the dark. In the evenings we have to be careful of running lights, etc.

My husband is also concerned about the neighborhood dogs getting aggressive. We just can't seem to find a pattern to when they start barking and if there is any difference between night or day. They seem to be more active at night and start earlier than they do during the day.

I haven't noticed a pattern as to what triggers the attacks, except there seems to be a lot more of them at night.

Has anyone ever heard of a puppy getting nervous at night?

The vet said it was normal for the puppy to bark at night and the dog was fine.

Any ideas?

It is more likely that they are hearing a threat from the neighbor dogs and they are just reacting, it's a protective instinct of a dog to be aware and protective of their home, so as long as it is not at night and they are alone with you that is perfectly fine.

Hi,

This is what our vet told us, but now I'm just wondering, is this normal behavior in puppies or is it something else? Our puppy has only been living with us about three weeks. This is her first "home" as far as we know. She's a little timid at times, but we've been taking it easy with her and she's getting better and better with us. She's really good with people and she's starting to take her food and water on her own.

I guess I'm just a little worried about what's happening. Is it normal for a puppy to be afraid of the dark?

Hi,

Yes, it is normal for a puppy to be nervous at night, or even for any type of noise. However, there are also a few common health conditions that can cause this. I would suggest getting a second opinion from a different vet. There may be some things that you are not aware of that may be causing this.

Hi,

Thank you.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not sure what's happening. It seems to be worse at night, but we also have a cat and she barks like crazy at night so she can be quite annoying.

I know my neighbors and the cat's owner are very nice people, but I'd still feel better knowing what's going on.

If it's normal, then I'll keep it to myself, but I'd like to be more aware of what's happening.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello,

I have been a vet for 20 years, but I do not recall ever having heard of this type of problem. You should consult a different vet for help in this case.

It might also be worth mentioning that in addition to being scared of the dark, there are also a variety of other physical reasons why a puppy might start to bark in the night, like being lonely or sick.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. It's interesting that you mention all of these things. I've been thinking about these things
