SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A man barricaded himself in a bathroom and shot a woman to death before killing himself, authorities sd Wednesday after a long standoff in the southern California town of Huntington Beach.

Police responded around 10:30 a.m. to a home in a wealthy residential area on the city's west side and found the wounded victim inside a bathroom, police Chief Robert Handy told reporters. A bullet hole was found in a closet of the apartment, and there were signs the dead woman had been recently dragged through the carpet, Handy sd.

Officers then found the man, who lived in the apartment, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Handy sd investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic violence incident involving the victim and the suspect. He sd the suspect appeared to have broken into the apartment where the woman lived with her 5-year-old daughter.

Handy sd the apartment was secured at the time of the shooting and was not accessible to the public. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect was renting or owned the apartment.

Residents in the area were ordered to shelter in place and the school district closed all schools in the city. Huntington Beach City Councilman John McAlister sd the area was locked down and there was an unknown number of police officers at the scene.

The woman's identity and age were not released, and police did not release any other information about her.
