Can i put vicks on my dog

Can i put vicks on my dog

Can i put vicks on my dog?

Hi All!

I have a 7 month old Maltese and have been reading that it is good to use Vicks on her throat for coughs or colds.

She's been on Vicks for around a week but is just starting to have a runny nose and a sore throat.

She had been having this every day for about 3 weeks until this week.

The vet has prescribed a 2 day course of paracetamol for the runny nose and sore throat.

I don't want to start a course of paracetamol for a week and then stop and risk it not working for her. I've tried to find out whether or not it's okay to use Vicks for the sore throat. It seems a lot of websites say to use it for coughs but not sore throats.

Also, does it really matter what you use - is it just about which product is there and which one is best? Do you need to use any particular brand?

We've been using a homeopathic treatment on her. It's called "Pawdontic", which I got from our pharmacist.

Does anyone know if it's okay to use Vicks on the throat and also what is the best product to use?

She is having her second course of paracetamol on the 10th July but if you want, we can switch her over to the homeopathic medicine which is avlable in Boots.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Lucy

I'm not a vet but I'm a bit of a dog obsessive! :D

Hello Lucy

This forum is a little like a car forum in the sense that it's very hard to give medical advice. I suggest you try asking your vet. As the majority of vets and most vets in trning these days have a good understanding of human drugs and their application in veterinary practice. I do think that you should ask your vet.

Good luck with your pup

Mmmm - Vicks is an active ingredient in cough syrups etc, but I think they are a bit over the top as I don't think they work. I don't know about paracetamol for a sore throat, but I have used it when my little girl's gums got red/swollen and she had a bad cold and it seemed to work well.

Good luck

Thanks guys.

Sorry I hadn't realised that the majority of vets don't really understand the human drugs.

I'll go back to the vet tomorrow and ask him to check if she is okay to stop the paracetamol and use the homeopathic one.

I don't mind if I can't get any answers. I've found that with the homeopathic medicine her runny nose and sore throat has eased. I don't think she can eat anymore, but she's still taking it.

Thanks

No, you don't need to.

If you are using Vicks that is because you are trying to make her feel better and get rid of the runny nose and sore throat. If she is on paracetamol and it is not clearing her up she may need to take something else and if you stop the paracetamol your dog could get dehydrated.

There is no need for you to continue giving her Vicks.

My dog is now 10 months and i just put vicks on my dog for coughs. I did it for 3 days and now it doesnt work anymore. She still has a sore throat. What can i do?

i dont think you need to continue with vicks. The other one is much better. I was told to give my girl a tablet of paracetamol for a sore throat. She took the tablet and in 5 minutes the sore throat was gone! I did not see her for another 2 weeks and when i looked in her mouth she was not bleeding at all. I have to say, i was very impressed!

Thank you all for your replies.

The vet sd that the vet is a human doctor but that we should be able to get some advice.

I'll speak to the vet tomorrow and ask if it is okay to stop the paracetamol and use the homeopathic medicine.

If she does take the paracetamol, I'll continue to give it to her to make sure she is hydrated. I'd have thought it would be okay to give her the homeopathic medicine to stop the runny nose and sore throat.

Thanks agn

The vet is a human doctor. They may or may not know about the use of homeopathic remedies. You should have a look at the vet's website for more information on homeopathic remedies. I have used homeopathic remedies in dogs before.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to ask my vet if it is ok to stop giving paracetamol and use homeopathic one instead. I have no idea if it's ok to stop using one but I know that it's ok to use the other.

I'll ask the vet to check on the health of the rest of my dog - do you think it's okay to use the homeopathic one for that?

Thanks

The homeopathic medicine is not an antibiotic, so it shouldn't do any harm, but my advice would be to ask your vet, you know your dog better than us.

17th Jul 2011

If you use it for coughs and colds, I would not use it for a sore throat.

No!

If your dog has a sore throat she needs an antibiotic.

It is not safe for a dog to take antibiotics.
