Production of Stray Cats 40 began shortly after the release of their first album, Stray Cats. As the band’s career had grown, they were no longer performing as a trio and bassist Tony Harnell was replaced with bassist Tony Thorpe, although Harnell had contributed some of the songwriting on the album.

Stray Cats 40 was released on February 22, 1987, in the United States. It reached #11 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and remned on the charts for five weeks. The album was a moderate success and was met with positive reviews, although some critics felt that Stray Cats 40 was not as good as the previous three albums. Stray Cats 40 reached #2 on the UK Albums Chart and remned on the charts for two weeks.
