The Dog's World

By Kate Kiefer, DVM

I'm a veterinarian in central Florida. I write

this page for any dog owner who would like to know about what to

expect when their dog licks grass, how to handle it, and why dogs

are attracted to it.

My clients usually bring me a bag of freshly gathered grass.

"I'm really sorry," they say, "I just love to watch my

dog eat it. Can you explain why my dog is doing this?" I try

to be very clear and thorough. I remind them that every dog has a

different nutritional profile than every other dog. I point out

that many different species of animal will eat grass. Some

monkeys, for example, actually have an affinity for it, and some

even eat it every day. Many birds, reptiles, and fish will eat

grass, including fish that live in our rivers.

Why Does Your Dog Eat Grass?

A good question, and one I'm sure that your vet can't answer. My

guess is that the answer is as varied as the dog's taste in

other food. Many dogs are born to chew on bones, and some owners

love to have them eat grass. Maybe your dog is bored. Some dogs

are born to be a couch potato, and they will eat grass to

calm their cravings. Maybe they are not a couch potato, but you

want to give them an activity like digging in the yard, or maybe

you are just interested in observing a dog's favorite pastime.

Whatever the reason, it may simply be that your dog is born to

eat grass.

How to Handle Your Dog's Licking of Grass

It's actually very difficult to tell why dogs will eat grass,

but I can offer a few ideas.

First, a dog's instinct may tell him that grass has a lot of

energy. Some dogs love to eat grass, others have an affinity

for it. I have seen dogs eat grass when it is on the ground,

like their prey. If you let a dog run wild, for example, he may

eat grass as a way of surviving. When a dog's instinct leads

him to eat grass, he may try to eat grass as a way of soothing

an itching or nervous feeling. Many dogs will eat grass after

they get chased by a strange dog, a cat, or even a human. The

licking may be a subconscious desire to calm their fear.

Why does your dog lick grass? Leave your dog alone and keep

his grass free of any sticks, rocks, twigs, or other objects

that could cause him injury.
