You can get rid of fleas by following the advice given in our How to get rid of fleas page. The most effective way to treat your pet for fleas is to treat the entire household with a spot-on flea treatment at the same time.

Pellets can be useful to treat a limited number of pets. They work by irritating the skin of the dog and creating a barrier that stops the fleas from entering the skin.

If you notice that you have any of the signs or symptoms of a flea problem, you should treat your pet for fleas as soon as you notice that your pet is becoming affected.

What you can use to treat your dog or cat:

Flea dips

Flea tablets

Flea comb

Flea spray

Flea sprays can be effective for treating small amounts of fleas. Sprays should not be applied near eyes or when you are trying to remove the flea from your pet. You should spray your pet in small amounts, taking care not to get it in your eyes.

Flea sprays contn pesticides which can kill your pet. Do not spray in areas where you or your child will be near. Do not spray your pet while it is eating, drinking, sleeping or playing. Do not spray on the fur of your pet.

Do not use products contning nicotine.

If you notice that your pet has any of the signs or symptoms of a flea problem, you should treat your pet for fleas as soon as you notice that your pet is becoming affected.

Fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are good for your pet, however certn fruits and vegetables can be harmful to your pet. Make sure that you keep any items that are not good for your pet away from your pet, and ensure that they are washed thoroughly before giving them to your pet.

The following are items that you should be careful to avoid when giving your pet:

Any fruit that is hard or has seeds inside.

The stalks of rhubarb or nettles.

Any fruits or vegetables that have been exposed to pesticides.

Any fruit that has been kept near a radiator, oven, or any other heat source.

If you notice that your pet has any of the signs or symptoms of a fruit or vegetable problem, you should contact your vet.

How do you know if you have a fruit or vegetable problem?

Your pet may not eat the entire food they are given.

If your pet has been having trouble swallowing their food, they may be vomiting or have diarrhoea.

Your pet may not show any signs of eating the fruit or vegetable. If they have eaten some of it, they may have a change in their coat or skin.

If your pet has eaten some of the fruit or vegetable and has a change in their coat or skin, it can be due to one or more of the following:

They may have a skin rash.

The fruit or vegetable may have irritated their stomach or intestines.

The fruit or vegetable may have caused your pet to have an upset stomach.

Food and drink that has not been fully digested may cause an upset stomach.

How do you know if your pet has a food or drink problem?

You may notice your pet vomiting or having diarrhoea.

You may notice that your pet's coat or skin has changed.
